Identify Pests that Destroy Your Home

July 12, 2019

When you suspect wood destroying bugs Albany OR, there are a variety of insects that can cause damage to a home or wooden structures on a property. While each pest has a different method of extermination, they can all lead to damage that can be unseen for years.

Termites

Termites come in two varieties: subterranean and dry wood. Subterranean termites thrive on moisture and build their nests underground. They are typically found in cool and moist areas like basements, and they also infest wood at the foundation of a structure as it is closest to the ground. Drywood termites, on the other hand, infest homes above ground, preferring to eat away at dryer wood sources. This can include fencing and any dry lumber near your home.

Carpenter Ants

Due to having wings, carpenter ants are sometimes confused for termites. However, where termites infest wood to eat the cellulose, the ants do not feed off the wood. Inside wood structures, carpenter ants will build their nest, and as their nest expands in size, it does more damage inside the wood. While carpenter ants will establish their nests in both dry and moist wood, rotting wood in basements and around window frames and doorways allows them to establish a colony within a structure.

Powderpost Beetles

Like termites, powderpost beetles feed off the wooden structures they infest. There are two different species of this beetle, but they both chew tunnels into wooden structures. While the damage of carpenter ants and termites tends to be under the surface of the wood, making it harder to detect infestations, powderpost beetles can cause cosmetic damage by boring into the outer surface. They can cause holes in the floors, paneling, and even wooden furniture.

Signs of an infestation can vary based on the pest inside your home, but when there is a suspicion, action to exterminate them should be started as soon as possible to ensure the integrity of your home’s structure.
