Self-care is one of those buzzwords that many people are hearing within society right now. This is mainly because so many individuals are dealing with mental health issues. People are grappling with depression, anxiety and so much more. While there are different theories surrounding the reasons why people are dealing with mental health more than ever before, it’s best to acknowledge the need for self-care. Too often, people run until their bodies break down. They don’t take the time to rest. It’s important to understand that you are not a robot. You’re going to need times where you rest your mind, body and soul. If you don’t already have self-care routine, consider these tips to develop one.
1. Create margin.
While it is important to be productive, productivity is different from busyness. If you’re busy without a purpose, you’re going to wear yourself down. Make a habit out of building a daily schedule and creating margin within that schedule. You don’t want to overbook yourself. Just because you have a couple hours between your first appointment and your next appointment doesn’t mean that you have to fill that time up with other appointments. In fact, you can use that time to read a book, mindfully eat a meal or take a nap. Take time to rest. It’s okay.
2. Plan times for self-care.
If you know that you’re entering a busy season at work, make sure that you schedule times to get away and relax. If you try to sustain yourself after working 12-hour days, you’re going to burn out. Instead, take time during the weekend to go to the spa and get a massage. When you’re at work, go for a walk during your lunch break. If you need to take a step away for ten minutes in order to do some deep breathing exercises, this will help you push through some of the difficult moments when you have a lot on your plate.
3. Invest in your self-care.
Vacations are like sabbaticals. They give you a chance to get away from the regular hustle of everyday life and relax. Whether you choose to go overseas for a tropical vacation or head over to one of the quiet beaches in north carolina, take time to get away from your regular scene. It’ll allow you to recharge and refresh yourself.
